Multi-Tool

In any survival situation, it is always in your best interest to get as many uses at of any one item as you possibly can. This helps to minimize the amount of stuff you’ll ultimately have to carry with you and will make your life a whole lot easier. Nothing exemplifies this concept quite like a well-designed multi-tool. What started with the simple and revolutionary Swiss Army Knife has evolved into some of the most brilliantly designed, ergonomic, durable and lightweight tools the world has ever seen. Remember though that not all multi-tools are created equally. We’ll take a look at some that are renowned for their durability, versatility and overall utility.

Leatherman Skeletool CX Multi-Tool

This is one badass piece of equipment. The Skeletool CX has a stainless steel body that is coated with Tungsten DLC/Carbon fiber. That makes it durable and comfortable to handle. The tools included are a blade, needlenose/regular pliers, wire cutters, four bits/bit driver and bottle opener. The bits included are Phillips #1 and #2 as well as 3/16” and 1/4” flatheads.

They’ve ergonomically designed this tool to fit comfortably in your hand without compromising the quality of accessories included. Additionally, the Skeletool CX has had all of the non-essential steel cut away from or drilled out of the handle, making it lightweight without sacrificing durability. Don’t leave home without it.

Leatherman New Wave Multi-Tool

The Leatherman New Wave is the ultimate in precision crafted durability. Made exclusively from heat-hardened stainless steel, this is the last multi-tool you’ll ever need to buy. One of my favorite features of the New Wave is that all of the tools rotate individually making it easy to grab one tool at a time. This means you don’t have to waste time fumbling with the scissors when all you need is a serrated blade (and we all know how frustrating it is when that happens). The New Wave comes equipped with needlenose and regular pliers, plus wire strippers and newly designed wire cutters and hard-wire cutters as well as a clip-point knife, serrated knife and saw. Not to mention two double-end bits: one with a Phillips #1 and #2 and the other with an extra-small Phillips and flat-tip eyeglass screwdriver as well as two bit drivers, large and small, and a 3/16” flathead. You’ll also find a diamond-coated file, scissors and a can/bottle opener. The New wave has pretty much everything but the kitchen sink is included. It even comes with a tactical nylon carrying case. The New Wave is built to stand the test of time.

Leatherman Surge Multi-Tool

When you absolutely have to have the most hardcore, beefcake, heavy-duty multi-tool that there is, I present to you the Leatherman Surge. The Surge is very similar to what the New Wave would look like if it took some performance enhancing drugs during the off season and turned into a heap of muscles. The Surge is built to handle whatever you throw at it and then some. Built with the same heat-hardened stainless steel construction we’ve talked about before, but with a newly designed jaw system, the Surge has the strongest gripping pliers (regular OR needlenose) in the Leatherman line. The Surge features a clip-point knife as well as a serrated blade and a saw to handle any cutting needs you may encounter. With the Surge you’ll also get a crosscutting file, two bit-drivers with two double-end steel bits with 3/16-inch screwdriver, plus #1 and #2 Phillips screwdrivers. Think that’s it? Not even close. There’s also a 5/16-inch screwdriver, crimper, scissors, can/bottle opener, lanyard ring, awl with thread loop, and Phillips/flat tip eyeglasses screwdriver. Oh, and lets not forget the wire strippers and newly designed wire cutters, hard-wire, and stranded-wire cutters. Folks, they just don’t make them any more comprehensive than this. If you need it, the Surge has got it.
