Manuals
We’ve talked about a lot of equipment and materials in the course of discussing long-run survival kits. We’ve also talked about quite a few manuals and guides for survival along the way. What we’re going to do today is put together a list of the absolute best of the best survival guides and manuals, all in one place, just in case you missed them in the articles along the way. These books will be your guides through the apocalypse and beyond, assuming you kick ass and survive, which we know you will. So without further ado I give you:
The Zombie Apocalypse Required Reading List (Part 1)
The Big Book Of Self Reliant Living Vol 2
If you ONLY get ONE book, make it this one. This thing has everything you need to know about everything. It’ll show you how to build a house, grow a garden, skin a squirrel, install a cistern, mend broken bones, plant crops based on geographic location…and so much more! Seriously, this book is amazing and everyone should own a copy.
Nols Wilderness Medicine 5th Edition
This is a great guidebook on wilderness first aid that extends from minor injuries all the way to mental health evaluation. This NOLS guide is a great resource for diagnosing and treating ailments in the field.
Wilderness First Responder 2nd Edition
You’ve heard of “The Silver Linings Playbook”? Well this is sort of like the “oh shit, what just happened” playbook. It’s a guide to triage and emergency response in less than 1st world situations. There are sections on severe burns, dehydration, broken bones and blood loss. One of the best lessons you can learn in a survival situation is how to keep as much of your blood in your body as possible and this book will help you to do that.
The Composting Toilet System Book
This handy dandy guide will help you to establish a self-contained sanitary human waste disposal system. In the long run, this is one of the most important tasks you can undertake for the health of your community. Remember that one of the hallmarks of civilization is sanitary plumbing. This may be the zombie apocalypse, but that’s no excuse for not maintaining a civil society in our compound.
Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs: A Beginners Guide
This book provides some very good insight into maintaining a comfortable and healthy life without access to many of the modern pharmaceuticals we’ve become accustomed to having. There are instructions for planting and maintaining as well as instructions for the use of a variety of herbs to cure common ailments. Everything from digestive issues to headaches are addressed in this thorough and informative manual.
Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives
The full title of this text continues on to say “For treating drug-resistant bacteria”, but that’s not why we’re after it. You see many antibiotics have a short shelf life and they require a prescription to obtain them. Therefore, many of us will be out of antibiotics before we know it and that can lead to excessive difficulty in treating infections. What this book provides is a way to grow and maintain natural antibiotic remedies that can help to stave off infections in the absence of modern medical science. This is a great resource to have on the shelf.
