5 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse You Probably Haven’t Thought Of
Chances are since you’re on zombieprepared.org you’ve probably thought more about the zombie apocalypse than most.
There are tons of books and articles about basic zombie survival tips from fortifying your home to choosing the best weapon for killing walkers (it’s a machete). They mostly seem to have the same information. We took it a step further and compiled a list of ways to help you survive the zombie apocalypse.
Here are 5 advanced zombie survival tips you won’t find anywhere else.
Go to an office complex to forage for essentials
Offices are a great place to go to stock up on essential survival supplies. In an office park you can find 3 of the most important items to keep you alive. First aid kits, drinkable water and non-perishable food. Few people think business park when they think survival so there’s a good chance they haven’t been touched by other foragers. Plus because no one goes to work during a zombie apocalypse there will probably be few if Z’s there if any.
Drinkable Water
One of the biggest obstacles to staying alive during a zombie apocalypse is dehydration. While dehydration affects seniors and young kids more often, even the most fit person can suffer from a lack of hydration. So finding potable water is key. One of the best place to find clean drinking water can be found in the office water cooler. Most offices have some kind of water dispenser. Many of these use 5 gallon water jugs. These sealed jugs are easy to transport and can provide you weeks worth of drinking water while you figure out a permanent solution. While you’re foraging in offices, look for a bottleless water cooler. These hydration machines usually have sealed tanks inside filled with drinking water that’s a perfect option to refill your canteens on the go. Plus you can use the filters inside them for water filtration.
First Aid Kits
All businesses are required to have fully stocked first-aid kit. It’s an OSHA safety requirement. You can find bandages, gauze, splints, wound cleaning agents such as sealed moistened towelettes. Many first aid kits also contain medicine like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil) that help reduce fever and inflammation, and other stomach medicine like Pepto Bismol.
Food
Vending Machines are post-apocalyptic treasure chests. While many of the chips and candy won’t provide much in the way of nutrition, they do offer high amount of calories to keep you going until you find your next meal. There’s nothing like a sweet delicious candy bar to give you an escape from the hellish apocalypse. Even if its only for a minute. Because treats will become a rarity, there’s a good chance you can use any vending machine items for bartering to get needed supplies. As a bonus some office vending machines contain Advil and Tylenol.
Sew Together Layers Of Denim
One of the most immediate dangers of a zombie apocalypse is a bite from the rotting dead. Why not wear something to stop the bites. That’s where the wonderful fabric that is denim comes in. A single layer of denim, probably wouldn’t afford much protection. However, in medieval times, most poor soldiers wore layers of linen quilted together as armor, that provided decent enough protection. The same approach would work for zombies. Sewing together 3 layers of denim quilted would provide enough to stop any bite. No promises if you’re surrounded. Denim also has the advantage of being lightweight and breathable so you won’t overheat while wearing it compared to something like riot armor or a leather jacket.
Get Some Spray Paint
Grab a couple cans of spray paint. Simply spray a tree or a wall, and you’ll know you’ve already explored that area. This is great for helping your party find you incase you get separated. You can write messages to other survivors to warn them of impending dangers or to the helicopters flying overhead. Just make sure to write legibly.
Stockpile Some Booze
While you don’t want to be totally inebriated during a zombie apocalypse it’s a good idea to collect some high proof booze. Alcohol works great for cleaning wounds and as an anesthetic. If you grab the good stuff you can also use it for its trade value. Plus you can use the booze to drown your sorrows and quiet the screams of love ones being torn apart by Zs. Just make sure to drink responsibly.
Drive An Electric Car
The biggest advantage to an electric car is how quiet they are. You can drive into a town and the zombies ever knowing you’re around. Because they’re rechargeable they’ll never run out of fuel. You’re probably still thinking that’s a terrible idea because there will be no electricity in world full of zombies. This doesn’t need to be the case though. You can set up your shelter with a solar installation to charge your electric car just as it will supply energy for the rest of your survival gadgets and appliances. Even a small solar panel array with only 10 solar panels can provide enough power to charge your vehicle’s battery.
Whether or not the zombie apocalypse does come it’s always good to be prepared. Just in case. By preparing ahead of time and getting your supplies in order — and your mental readiness on call — you will have everything that you need to survive.
